Blood Orange Scones

For years our mother made hundreds of scones every night so customers at Beverly’s Best in Brea could enjoy fresh, scrumptious scones on their way to work in the morning. I remember on a few occasions I would beg my mom to let me go with her; I promised to not be annoying and be a helping hand. While I did help (I have no clue how my 11/12 year-old arms lifted those 25 lb. flour bags) I could never stay awake the full shift and would inevitably curl up in the front area for a “quick cat nap.” Fun times!

These days I rarely get the opportunity to make scones - they are often overlooked or play second fiddle to the English muffin or donut. Well, today I resurrected our forgotten brethren! These buttery, crumbly breakfast pastries get a kick of citrus from the beautiful blood orange. Topped with a blood orange glaze to give just a hint of sweetness, these tender scones are a perfect way to break your fast. Serve with a cup of tea and take a relaxing break before starting your day.
